Silvia Albarella was born in Naples and studied Stage and Costume Design at the Accademia di belle Arti di Napoli. In 1996 she moved to Berlin, where she still lives and works as an artist as well as stage and costume designer. She works both for her own productions and for other artists and theatres.
The focus of her work lies at the interface between theatre, film, performance and, most recently, virtual reality.
In addition to working at state institutions such as the Berliner Ensemble and Schaubühne am Lehninerplatz (1996-2002 as an assistant) and Leipzig Theatre, Staatstheater Braunschweig, Theater Konstanz and TJG in Dresden, she has been working in the independent theatre scene since 2005, including works with Anne Hirth/büro for zeit+raum, A+B Tanzbau, Theater Aspik, Riki von Falken, Tanzkomplizen and TD Berlin.
These productions have been performed at national and international festivals and venues, including the Sophiensaele, HAU, Dock 11, Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, Radialsystem V in Berlin, at the FFT Düsseldorf, LOT Braunschweig, fabrik Potsdam, Kampnagel Hamburg, Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen and in Helsinki, Kyiv, Kraków, Paris, Marseille, Vienna and Den Haag.
In 2010 she started bringing together artists from different backgrounds to realize projects that deal with the topic of communication and its difficulties.
The performance NON TUTTA, realized in 2012 in collaboration with Anne Tismer (Sophiensaele and FFT Düsseldorf), was very successful and highlighted the happiness potential of hysterical communication. The production was shown again at the Sophiensaele in 2013 and
was also invited to the Festival d'Avignon
In 2021, Silvia Albarella received the INITIAL special scholarship from the Akademie der Künste and started researching for her next project LA STRADA MOLESTA , a virtual reality performative installation. In this context, she started collaborating with the artist collective "CyberRäuber - The COLLECTIVE OF DIGITAL ARTS.
At the end of 2022 and beginning of 2023 she also received the financial support form Fonds Darstellende Künste in Germany to continue the research and work on LA STRADA MOLESTA.
This VR Project celebrated its premiere in April 2024 at TD Berlin, in October 2024 was invited at Dokumentale documentary and media festival in Berlin and won in the VR category at DA Z, Digital arts festival Zurich.
Silvia Albarella has also been working as a set and costume designer for film since 2003, most recently as costume designer for the feature film ELLBOGEN, based on the novel of the same name by Fatma Aydemir.
